Once a year, us Hinze boys get together to play golf. It’s a tradition we keep going for a pretty simple reason: we want to honor our family and spend time together.
What The Fin always finds its way into the trip, too. My dad, the founder and CEO of What The Fin, makes shirts for each year’s outing. Sometimes they’re T-shirts, sometimes performance shirts, sometimes polos. They usually feature a fun saying—the same kind of personality you’ll find on the What The Fin shirts we sell online.
They give each year’s trip its own identity while keeping the family tradition going.
Meet the Hinze Boys
There are four of us on this annual outing: me, Keaton, the youngest; my dad; Papa Carl, my dad’s dad; and Uncle Teddy, whose full name is Theodore Hinze.
Teddy is Papa Carl’s brother, which makes him my dad’s uncle and my great-uncle. Three generations of Hinze boys, making time to get together.
Here’s a fun fact about the four of us: we all have the same mermaid tattoo. Yep, all four Hinze boys.
Between the matching tattoos and the shirts, we carry a few reminders of what connects us.
Keeping the Tradition Going
I’m the youngest Hinze boy carrying on the family name. Hopefully, I’ll have a son one day and get to share this tradition with him, too.
For now, I’m grateful we keep making time for it. Getting everyone together each year gives us a chance to honor our family and enjoy one another’s company.
What The Fin has become such a big part of our lives that it naturally comes along. That connection to family—and enjoying life together—is part of what the brand means to us.
Still Thinking About Fishing
Of course, What The Fin is a fishing, beach-life, and lake-life brand. We love being around the water, but we enjoy plenty of other activities, too.
Although, every time I came across a golf-course pond, I was thinking about what I could throw in there to catch a bass.
Apparently, even on a golf trip, my mind finds its way back to fishing.
Make Time for Your People
That’s what I want to encourage our What The Fin people to do: enjoy time with your family and the people you love.
Go fishing. Play golf. Find something you enjoy doing together and make time for it. It doesn’t have to happen on the water to be time well spent.
For us, that means getting the Hinze boys together once a year, putting on that year’s shirts, and keeping a family tradition alive.
